Paint Decontamination
Regular washing removes loose dirt sitting on top of the clear coat, but it doesn't touch contamination that has chemically bonded to the paint — rail dust and iron particles from brakes and nearby rail lines, industrial fallout, and tar from Highway 99 or 41 driving. These embed into the clear coat rather than resting on the surface.
Decontamination uses chemical products, not abrasion, to dissolve or loosen these bonded particles before any wax, sealant, or coating is applied.

What bonded contamination actually is
Iron particles from brake dust and rail exposure oxidize and etch into the clear coat over time. Tar and asphalt residue from highway driving sticks to paint and hardens. Industrial fallout from nearby agricultural or manufacturing activity can also embed as fine, gritty deposits. None of these wash off with soap and water alone.
How we assess contamination
We run a hand over clean, dry paint wrapped in a plastic bag — bonded contamination feels like sandpaper-like texture even when the paint looks glossy. This tactile check tells us how much decontamination is needed before moving to wax, sealant, or coating work.
The decontamination process
An iron remover is applied first, which chemically reacts with embedded iron particles (often visible as a purple bleeding color) and loosens them for safe rinsing. A tar and adhesive remover follows for sticky residue. This is done before any mechanical clay bar step.

Decontamination versus clay bar treatment
These two are complementary, not the same thing. Decontamination chemically dissolves specific contaminants; clay bar treatment physically shears off whatever remains bonded to the surface afterward, including things chemicals alone can't fully release. Most paint benefits from both in sequence.
