What clay bar actually does
A clay bar (or clay-infused mitt) is worked across lubricated paint in straight lines, and its slightly tacky surface grabs and lifts embedded particles — overspray specks, dried tree sap residue, mineral deposits, and fine bonded grit — pulling them out of the clear coat rather than pushing them around.
Assessing the need for clay
We check paint by touch through a plastic bag after washing; if it feels rough or sandpaper-like rather than smooth, clay treatment is warranted. Heavily contaminated paint may need this more than once in a session, with fresh clay each pass once the surface starts loading up with removed particles.
The process
Paint is washed and dried first. Clay lubricant is sprayed on a small section, the clay is worked gently back and forth without pressing hard, and the surface is wiped and re-checked. This is repeated panel by panel across the vehicle, with the clay itself inspected and kneaded to a clean face regularly.
